Samurai Weapons
The Samurai didn't use many weapons and most of the weapons used, were swords. Some other items they had, were armor, as well as other things -such as to do with tradition, like traditional fans. One of the main samurai weapons, was the Katana sword. It one of the finest swords ever built. Below is a list of Japanese weapons (mainly swords):
Katana
The Katana was one of the best and most common swords used by samurai warriors. It has a fine cutting blade, made to cut an enemy quickly and easily. "Katana" actually means, "long sword". The Katana actually is the longest sword that most samurai used. It is made by using a long process of using materials such as sand and steel, to indiviually burn and fold (at the same time), as the Katana maker folds thousands of layers to slowly form the shape and sharp edge of the great blade. A video of how the Katana is made can be found at the bottom of this page. Wakizashi
Samurai would also use to carry and second, smaller weapon with them. Usually they would carry around the Wakizashi sword. Carrying both swords would give the warrior and upperhand, especially if the enemy has only one sword. Tanto Another bladed weapon was the Tanto. A Tanto was basically like a dagger. This weapon was small but sharp, great for suprise attacks. Kama Samurai were good at inventing things. One of the weapons the samurai invented, was the Kama. A Kama is basically a sharp farming tool (like the picture to the left), similar to the western world's sickle tool. Kama were made for both left and right handed. Kama were usually used in a practice called, "tandem" (a type of martial art practice still used today). |
